Thinking about donating to a political campaign for the 2012 elections?
The Federal Election Commission says individuals can now contribute up to $2,500 per election, adjusting the limit for inflation. That's an increase of $100 for every primary or general election.
The adjustments are required under the campaign finance law pushed by Republican John McCain and Democrat Russ Feingold. It became law in 2002.
New spending limits are released during every presidential election cycle. These cover the period between Jan. 1, 2011, and Dec. 31, 2012.
Overall, an individual cannot contribute more than $117,000 for the 2012 elections -- $46,200 to all candidates and $70,800 to political parties and political action committees.
