Poll: Students use social media to aid careers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sure, social media like Facebook and Twitter are distractions for young people, but college and high school students also use them to make important education and career connections, according to an Associated Press-Viacom poll.


Four out of 5 high school and college students say websites are an excellent or good way to interact with fellow students, and a bit fewer - about 7 in 10 - say they're equally good for getting information on class assignments or school events, or to form study groups and collaborate with peers. Just over half say the Internet is useful to look up ratings on teachers.

Lakers grind past Hornets, even playoff series

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kobe Bryant barely made a ripple on offense for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was too busy ensuring Chris Paul didn't make another huge splash that could have put the Lakers in a cavernous playoff hole.


Andrew Bynum had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Lamar Odom scored 16 points, and the Lakers survived quiet offensive games from their two biggest stars to even their first-round playoff series with an 87-78 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Red Wings hold on for 4-3 win over Phoenix

DETROIT (AP) -- Pavel Datsyuk scored and added two assists in the first period alone - including a marvelous move to set up a goal by Darren Helm - and the Detroit Red Wings held on for a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series.


Detroit already led 2-0 when Datsyuk poked the puck past a Phoenix player in the neutral zone and skated in on goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Datsyuk pulled the puck back between his legs before flipping a shot from close range that was saved. Helm was there for an easy goal on the rebound.


Datsyuk added another assist early in the second period for his first career four-point game in the playoffs. Brian Rafalski and Tomas Holmstrom also scored for Detroit, and Nicklas Lidstrom had two assists. Shane Doan scored twice for Phoenix, which nearly rallied from a four-goal deficit thanks to a suddenly potent power play.
